  2. Anticipation Guides • The anticipation guide is a previewing technique that introduces new material. • It is a way to get students to connect to the material before you introduce the content. • “An anticipation guide is a comprehension strategy that is used before reading to activate students' prior knowledge and build curiosity about a new topic.” Taken from Classroom Strategies Anticipation Guide through Reading Rockets

  3. What is an Anticipation Guide? • It consists of 3 to 10 statements that the students are required to agree or disagree with before reading the content. • “They teach students to make predictions, anticipate the text, and verify their predictions.” • It also activates schema and builds interest in the content. Taken from Classroom Strategies Anticipation Guide through Reading Rockets

  4. Why should we use Anticipation Guides? • “Increase students’ comprehension without students needing to constantly look back at text.” • It also teaches valuable text questioning skills. • Students are more likely to remember content that they feel connected with. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7ztfDG5fec Taken from Noel Gnadinger Anticipation Guides through Kentucky Board of Education

  5. The Teacher’s Role • The teacher has to come up with 3-10 questions that will activate the students prior knowledge on the subject. • Before the students do an anticipation guide for the first time the teacher should model how to think through and respond to the statements. • The teacher should consider the students divers backgrounds to make sure that the statements can be responded to properly. Taken from Anticipation Guides through Elgin High School

  6. Student’s Role • To adequately consider the statements • Draw from prior experiences and knowledge to fully develop his or her stance. • Read the content marking the evidence to support the statements • Afterwards the students should read back over the statements to see if their opinions have stayed the same or changed. Taken from Anticipation Guides through Elgin High School Taken from Classroom Strategies Anticipation Guide through Reading Rockets

  7. When and How should Anticipation Guides be used? • Before presenting any new material • Can be used in any and all content areas • They can be completed by an individual, small group, or whole group • Do NOT forget to have the students revisit the statements after the material has been presented to see how their opinions have changed. Taken from Anticipation Guides through Elgin High School

  8. Considerations • “Consider students' beliefs and experiences to ensure they will be able to respond.” • Consider the age group you are teaching so that the questions are developmentally appropriate. • Consider the content and try to find ways to link it to the experiences the students have had. • “What we already know determines to a great extent what we will pay attention to, perceive, learn, remember, and forget.” Taken from Anticipation Guides through Elgin High School Taken from Noel Gnadinger Anticipation Guides through Kentucky Board of Education
