  1. Francoise Nielly • Francoise Nielly is one of the most talked about contemporary female figure painters alive today. Growing up on the Mediterranean in the south of France helped influence her use of vivid florescent colour. She is inspired by big urban cities like Paris, New York and Vancouver. She describes how street culture turns cities into play grounds and how the diversity of a large city influences her wide colour palette. • She started out in advertising and has now been living solely off her painting for the last 11 years. • She has been so successful you can even purchase a snowboard from Burton that has one of her paintings printed on it.

  2. Your Task: First we will take a good well lit photo of either your face, nose, eyes, ears, mouth, hand, toe, foot or chin. This will be a close up photo. When you take your photo it is very important that you make sure you have a good range of value and that you zoom right in to you subject. The photo of the eye above has a good range of value but the one to the right is a bit too washed out.

  3. See how this photo has a clear direction of lights and darks. This photo has a good range of value and would be easier for you to see and draw then a washed out photo that has little difference between the lights and darks.

  4. Perfect Too Washed Out

  5. These are also good images to draw from.

  6. Once you have your photo you will choose a colored piece of construction paper to draw on. Use the same drawing techniques you have learned over the past few weeks to outline your image on your construction paper with pencil. Do not add any shading yet. Then…

  7. Use bright coloured pastels to put in all the lights and darks. Use darker colours for the darkest areas and bright colours for the lightest one.
