Weeks 7 & 8 Internet Regulation- Internet Regulation is putting up laws on the internet, limiting the freedom of the internet. Sometime last year, the government closed down a famous file sharing website called MegaUpload. This was there first move in starting to regulate the internet, they then attempted to pass a bill called “SOPA” which means Stop Online Privacy Act. This resulted in multiple of the government websites to go down due to thousands of angry citizens DDOSing one website at once. Internet Governance - Internet Governance is an attempt to regulate the internet into a better society of shared principles. Currently there is no one person who is designated to govern the internet, no one is quite sure if the government will or will not to choose so in the future. EdX - edX is a non-profit organization which is founded by MIT and Harvard University which offers free online courses. Currently, they are building an open-source online learning platform. If someone wanted to take an online class they would just have to login to the website, no admissions is necessary. Internet (IP) Addressing – Picture of tweet.
Weeks 9 &10 IPv6 - IPv6 is the latest revision of the Internet Protocol, which is the main communications protocol that the entire Internet is built. The main purpose of it is to replace IPv4 because IPv4 runs out of addresses at a certain time, while IPv6 does not. Net Neutrality - Net Neutrality is a principle that regulates the power of an ISP. It makes it so they are not allowed to interfere with anything that a consumer does, whether it is an illegal program or illegal downloads. This makes it so the consumer has all the freedom in the world to do whatever they please. Windows 8 - Windows 8 is the current release of the Windows OS. Microsoft owns the rights to this OS, it was made for use on personal computers with its modern day theme and layout. Many people do not like this new Operating System because it is completely different from Windows 7. Routing Autonomous Systems (ASNs) - Routing Autonomous Systems (ASNs) is a collection of connected IPs prefixes under the control of an ISP. This is a must for an ISP if they plan to have a successful company. Unfortunately the ISP has to register to get an ASN.
Weeks 11, 12 & 13 Privacy - Privacy on the internet is a very rare thing. People choose to share all there information through social networking sites like facebook and twitter. They tell people everything they need to know about a person. Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) - Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is an important protocol which makes core routing choices on the Internet. BGP was created to replace the Exterior Gateway Protocol. Since 1994, version four of BGP has been widely used and any previous version is now out dated. Spam - Spam is a huge problem throughout the Internet. People wish to grow their companies and make more money so they send multiple emails to various different emails to enlighten people about the company, but it is considered spam if they do not wish to receive the spam. MOOC - MOOC is an online course that is aimed towards a large-scale participation and open access throughout the Internet. Many of the MOOC out there do not require to pay to “take” this course but it also does not count as credits. Security - Security on the internet is a MUST if you plan on feeling safe. There are many shady characters on the internet who plan to steal your credit info or plant a keygen onto your computer. The FIRST thing you should do on any computer is download antivirus software and a firewall as well. You will most likely have to pay for it, but it will most likely help in the future. Standardization - Standardization is the process of developing standards in any field. It basically sets the bar for those who want to succeed in that particular field. As these standards are more commonly reached, they will be raised again so people can still prosper in that field.
