WARM UP and COOL DOWN. Why do we need to Warm Up?. To gradually prepare our whole body for exercise To avoid injury to muscles, tendons and ligaments. There are 4 key stages to a WARM UP. 1. Increase pulse/heart rate which raises the blood flow to the muscles Increased joint mobility

  2. Why do we need to Warm Up? • To gradually prepare our whole body for exercise • To avoid injury to muscles, tendons and ligaments

  3. There are 4 key stages to a WARM UP

  4. 1 • Increase pulse/heart rate which raises the blood flow to the muscles • Increased joint mobility Can you think of a way to achieve this?

  5. 2 • Complete different stretching exercises for large muscle groups • Dynamic stretching (on the move) • Static stretching (on the spot) Can you write down how long you hold a stretch for in a Warm Up?

  6. 3 • Refresh specific skill related practices for the activity you are participating in Can you write down an example of this for 2 different activities?

  7. 4 • Prepare your mind for the activity ahead • Mental preparation • Focused and ready to participate

  8. Why do we need to Cool Down • To help your body recover after exercise • Your heart to decrease slowly back to rest • Begin with light jogging gradually down to a walking pace • Complete your cool down with some stretching
