  2. Exam practice question Q. How does the poet use language to get his message across? First of all bullet point your ideas about how the poet has done this and why he has chosen to use particular words/phrases/techniques to get his point across. • Now answer the question using PEE paragraphs. • Aim to write at least 150 words. Use the following sentence starters to help you: • This suggests that… • This implies that… • This makes the reader… • The writer intends that… • This could mean…or… • The word/phrase…creates a feeling of… • This is associated with… • This creates an image of…

  3. Copy down the following phrases: • Half-caste • Mixed-race • Duel Heritage • Mixed heritage • Multi-cultral In pairs decide if you find the terms acceptable or not. • What do you think the phrase ‘Half-Caste’ means?

  4. Read the standard English version of ‘Half-Caste’ • Now consider your reaction or first impressions gained from the poem. • What do you think is the message of the poem? Do you think the poet gets this across well? • How could you change/improve the reading of this to better demonstrate the message and meaning in the poem?

John Agard Biographical info:John Agard was born in Guyana, which is located on the northeast shore of South America, in 1949 with a Caribbean father and a Portuguese mother (he is of mixed race).   The country was still a British colony at the time of his birth and did not gain independence until 1966. John Agard grew up with colonialism. In 1977 Agard moved to England where he settled permanently. He believes humour is an effective way of challenging people’s opinions.

  7. Annotating! Highlight and label examples of the following: • Sarcastic tone • Imagery/metaphors that show colours mixing • Imagery/metaphors that show him as half a person • Examples of non-standard English • Angry tone • Repetition Make a note of the rhyme scheme. Does it rhyme? Why do you think the poet has made this choice? What is the form of the poem?

  8. Structure As well as rhyme schemes and stanzas structure can also just mean the order of events in a piece of writing. How does the poet start his poem? How does this develop through the poem? How does he end his poem? What has changed/developed throughout the poem?
