  2. Exercise • Turn to the person next to you and introduce yourself. • Now introduce yourself again BUT this time introduce yourself on the understanding that work is not part of your life, that includes all the things that work allows you to do.

  4. The IPS Model (1) An evidence based model with 8 key principles: • Competitive employment • Zero exclusion - it is open to all those who want to work • Jobs found are consistent with people's preferences • Job search starts within 4-6 weeks, minimal reliance on pre-vocational training

  5. The IPS Model (2) • Co-location of employment specialists into clinical teams • Employment specialists develop relationships with employers based upon a person's work preferences • It provides time unlimited, individualised support for the person and their employer • Benefits counselling is included.

  6. The Evidence for IPS • A large proportion of people with serious mental health problems can, with support, gain and retain open employment • Versus Sheltered workshops • Versus Pre-vocational training • Supported employment • European Randomised Control Trial

  9. IPS in Mersey Care • Specialist Trust • 2 IPS providers • Network Employment since 1996 • 2011 organisational change to fully implement the IPS model

  10. How we did it (1) • Employment Advisors co-located and integrated into the Community Mental Health Teams • Employment notes integrated into clinical information systems • Specialist operational lead for service

  11. How we did it (2) • Maintained Network Employment brand • Centralised point of contact and admin for the employment team • Specialist vocational unit with peer support alongside becoming part of CMHT

  12. Focus on Employment (1) • Practice supervision, shadowing and joint visits • Personal development plans done jointly with Employment Specialist and relevant CMHT manager • Weekly group supervision/team meeting • Distinct record keeping systems for employer contacts, employment activity logs and timesheets

  13. Focus on Employment (2) • Person Centred Planning • Buddy system maintained and joint sales days arranged • Marketing materials, leaflets and stands

  14. Key Learning (1) • Importance of clear focus on employment and maintaining values • Building relationships with CMHT colleagues • Employment Advisors carrying out all aspects of employment support

  15. Key Learning (2) • Offering a retention service • Operational Lead • Importance of peer support within the employment service • Valuing the specialist role

  16. Outcomes • Increased referrals 2010 84 2011 92 2012 190 • 22 job starts • 749 employer contacts
