  1. After the collapse of Mali, the West African kingdom of Songhai emerged. Songhai was the largest of the West African trading kingdoms.

  4. In 1464, the people of Songhai captured Timbuktu. Do you remember that Timbuktu was a great center of learning in the West African kingdom of Mali?

  5. Afterwards, the people of Songhai took control of the Trans-Saharan trade routes.

  6. The rulers of Songhai were Muslims. Islam entered West Africa along trade routes.

  7. North African nomads were Muslims. Through trade, Islam entered West Africa. Trade increased cultural diffusion or the exchange of cultural ideas and objects.

  8. Though the West African kingdom of Songhai was the largest of the West African trading kingdoms, it fell in 1591. Moroccans with European guns invaded and attacked.

  9. The West African Kingdom of Songhai only lasted 100 years.
