  3. Native People Fight Back • President Abraham Lincoln 1861 • Dealing with Civil War and Native American problems in the West • Established Uintah Valley Reservation for Utes. • “Unsuitable for farming…[useless] except for nomadic hunting grounds for Indians.”

Bear River Massacre 1863 • Problems on the Western Trails • Travelers shot Shoshone Indians out of fright; Some Indians raided goods and killed travelers. • Colonel Patrick Connor: Found out there was a Shoshone Raid on some traveling gold miners. • Went to a Shoshone winter camp and slaughtered 300 Shoshone Indians and burned down their teepees.

  5. Black Hawk War 1865-1868 • Began raiding Mormon and Pioneer settlements and attacked settlers. • Longest and most destructive conflict in Utah Territory • About even number of people killed. • Eventually Black Hawk signed a peace treaty
