  2. The Dublin Institute Of Technology • Largest 3rd Level Educational Institute in the country. • Founded in 1992 from the six CDVEC’s but dates back to 1887. • 44 separate buildings located between the two canals in Dublin City centre.

  3. Dublin Institute Of Technology Cathal Brugha Street • Built 1941. Landmark Art Deco Building • School of Domestic Science • Faculty of Tourism & Food • 8 full size training kitchens • 2 Restaurant kitchens with Dining Rooms • 1 Staff and Student Cafeteria Restaurant

  4. ProjectBrief • To Improve the relatively poor energy • performance for the building • 302 KWh/m2 • The project was co-funded by: Sustainable Energy Ireland and The department of Education and Science

  5. Plant History • 1950 Two “Ideal Britannia” Solid Fuel open chamber boilers fitted. 1,982,000 Btu (580 Kw) each.. Heating • 1955 One “Ideal Britannia” Solid Fuel open chamber boilers fitted. 1,132,000 Btu (330 Kw). DHW • 1955 One 200 Gallon storage calorifer fitted • 1960 - 70’s Three more 200 Gallon storage calorifer fitted as demand increased and new teaching kitchens added. • 1980’s Three boilers converted to natural gas. • Controls. One “Sangamo” time clock operated in the manual position. (Switched on and off by the Porter)

  6. The Project • Phase One • Boiler Replacement. • Phase Two • Domestic Hot Water System Replacement. • Phase Three • Installation of a control system. (BMS)

  7. 3 Boilers were open chambered solid fuel. Retro fitted with Natural gas burners. No lead / lag. No separate boiler isolation. No controls. No insulation. Phase 1

  8. Fit 2 new Buderus “Thermostream” 300 kw boilers. Install a new valve and pipeing arrangement to allow for combined / separate heating and DHW. Phase 1

  9. 4 x 200 gallon DHW storage calorifiers fitted over a period of time as demand increased. No controls. Inefficient. Water storage not meeting demand Phase 2

  10. Install 2 x “ACV” “tank-in-tank” hot water storage tanks. Re-pipe the flow and return headers. Phase 2

  11. Phase 3 • Installation of a “Trend” Building Management System. • More accurate control of both Heating and DHW systems. • A reduction in energy consumption and environmental impact of energy use. • Live metering of utility consumption: Gas, Electricity and Water • Control strategies. • Winter Summer Mode • Degree Day Mode. • Optimisation.

  12. Conclusions • Energy Performance improved from 302 kWh/m2 to212 kWh/m2 • Energy Savings in first year 30 % Second year projected a further 10 % • Investment payback 3 years. • Addressed DHW peak demand issues.
