  4. Setting • Where and when does this story take place?

  5. Conflict • Internal – What decisions must the character make? • Self • External – What outside forces affect the character’s decisions? • Man • Nature • Society

  6. Suspense • Elements of plot which heighten tension

  7. Assignment • Read the story • Make note of the setting changes • Be able to recite the basic plot elements • Know at least one example of internal and external conflict that the protagonist encounters • Know one example of cause/effect You can but do not have to write this down. We will discuss these items in class. After you finish, write a one paragraph reaction to the story due in class tomorrow.
