  42. ADVANCED WIRELESS IT & TELECOM Internet Access Evolution Today there are basically three different options to access the internet: • Broadband Access (e.g. DSL, ISDN) The main problems with broadband access are: It is expensive and It doesn't reach all areas. • Dial-up Access The main problems with Dial-up are: The price is expensive and data rate is very slow. • WiFi Access The main problem with wifi (WLAN) is: The coverage is sparse.

  43. ADVANCED WIRELESS IT & TELECOM New Internet Access There is a new technology that solved all of those problems. This new technology is WiMAX: • WiMAX refers to broadband wireless networks that is based on the IEEE 802.16 standard, which ensures compatibility and interoperability between broadband wireless access equipment. • Although these markets have all the attributes required for a winning business case, they are not without challenges. • WiMAX-based access networks will enable local operators to cost-effectively reach millions of new potential customers and provide them with traditional voice and broadband data services that up to now have been denied.

  44. ADVANCED WIRELESS IT & TELECOM WiMAX Network Infrastructure • Consists of two parts: • WiMAX tower : • -Same to a Cellular System tower • -Coverage very large are • (8,000 square km) • - Connect directly to Internet using wired/wireless connection (high-bandwidth).

  45. ADVANCED WIRELESS IT & TELECOM WiMAX receiver • WiMAX receiver: • The receiver modem could be: • - a small outdoor box • - a PCMCIA card • - a USB dongle • - or built into a laptop

  46. ADVANCED WIRELESS IT & TELECOM WiMAX link frequencies • None-line-of-sight : ---Where a small antenna on your computer connects to the tower. ---In this mode, WiMAX uses a lower frequency range 2 GHz to 11 GHz (similar to WiFi). • Line-of-sight : ---Where a fixed panel antenna points straight to the WiMAX tower from a rooftop or pole. --- Its connection is stronger and more stable, so it's able to send a lot of data with fewer errors. ---Can use higher frequencies, with ranges reaching a possible 66 GHz. At higher frequencies, there is less interference and more bandwidth.

  47. ADVANCED WIRELESS IT & TELECOM WiMAX Operation Mode • WiMAX operates on the same general principles as WiFi • It sends data from one computer to another via radio signals. • The fastest WiFi connection can transmit up to 54 megabits per second. WiMAX should be able to handle up to 70 megabits per second The biggest difference isn't speed; it's distance. WiMAX outdistances WiFi by miles. WiFi's range is about 30 m. WiMAX will blanket a radius of 50 km with wireless access.

  48. ADVANCED WIRELESS IT & TELECOM WiMAX throughput rates

  49. ADVANCED WIRELESS IT & TELECOM WiMAX typical coverage

  50. ADVANCED WIRELESS IT & TELECOM WiMAX business plan • In analyzing the business case for fixed wireless access, it is informative to breakout the end to end network and look at the three major CAPEX components separately: • - Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) • - Base Station Infrastructure • - Edge, Core, and Central Office Equipment
