  1. Metric Conversions Math 314

  2. Time Frame • 1) Conversion Measurement • 2) Converting Area • 3) Converting Volume • 4) Litres

  3. Converting Measurement King Henry Died Mother Didn’t Care Much km hm dam m dm cm mm /10 *10

  4. Notes • When converting a measurement from 1 unit to another • a) when going up the chart (ex. dm  km), divide by 10 once for every step you go. This will move your decimal point one place to the left for every step.

  5. Example #1 • Convert 643 cm into meters • How many steps are you moving? • 2 steps • Dividing or multiplying? Decimal place to the left or right? • Dividing & moving to the left • 2 steps 643 cm  6.43 metres

  6. Notes • When going down the chart (ex. m to mm), multiply by 10 once for every step. This will move your decimal one place to the right for every step. • Example 6km = ? M • 3 steps 6km  6000 m

  7. Converting Area • To change “squared” units into other “squared” units, multiply or divide by 102 for every step • Ex. #1: 2.4 m2 ? cm2 • 2 steps down; 2.4 x 102x102 = 24,000 cm2 • Ex. #2: 63000 mm2 dm2 • 2 steps up; 63000 / 102 / 102 = 6.3 dm2

  8. Converting Volume • To change “cubed” units into other “cubed” units, multiply or divide by 103 for every step. • Ex. #1) 25 cm3 = ? mm3 • 1 step down; 25 x 103 = 2500 mm3

  9. Litres • Litres are measures of volume • 1 l = 1 dm3 • 1 ml = 1 cm3 • There are 1000 ml in 1 liter • You can be asked to convert cubic units into litres. What will you do? • Change into dm3 or cm3, then “cross the bridge”.

  10. Crossing the Bridge 1 m3 1 l 1 dm3 1 dl 1 l 1 ml 1 cm3 You may “cross the bridge at 1dm3 to 1 l or 1 cm3 to 1 ml or vice versa; these can be considered transfer points. If you do it anywhere else, you shall be eaten alive by the tiger! 1 mm3

  11. Practice • Example #1: 85000 mm3 = ? l • 1 step up 85000 mm3 / 103 = 85 cm3 • 85 cm3 = 85 ml (cross the bridge) • 85 ml = ? l • 3 steps up; 85 / 10 / 10 / 10 = 0.085 l

  12. More Practice • 14 m3 = ? L • 1 step down 14 x 103 = 14000 dm3 • 14000 dm3 = 14000 l (cross the bridge)
