  1. Welcome to Year 3

  2. Maths Daily Maths continues in Key Stage 2, we continue to build on the children’s knowledge. Each week we will focus on certain objectives. As there are so many targets for Year 3, please have a look over the Key Learning document in your own time and if you have any questions please contact me. Mental Maths Sometimes the children will be given a morning mental maths focus while we do the register – but our main lesson is on a Friday when we will learn new strategies and techniques for working mentally.

  3. English Throughout the year we will focus on different genres of writing. We will generally start a genre by reading books and analysing texts, finishing up with writing a piece that fits the genre. We will also have one lesson per week focusing on SPAG. Spelling We are continuing to use the ‘Read Write Inc’ programme. We now have 3 15minute spelling lessons each week – the focus for each session with be based around what the children’s spelling words are. Spelling words can be found on the Year 3 Spelling page or I do always have spares in class.

  4. Reading SCHOOL In Year 3 we have reading 4 out of 5 days of the week, during the 20minute session the children will be doing one of the following activities – guided reading, follow, comprehension or independent reading. Guided reading will always be completed with the class teacher or TA, however the other activities may be independent. HOME The children have already been sent home with a home reader – this should be read as soon as possible, Mrs Coar will change books regularly, sooner if the children finish them. Please write any comments inside the children’s diaries so Mrs Coar/Mr Brooks know whether to send an easier or more challenging book.

  5. Homework In Year 3 the children are given 2 pieces of homework – spelling and Maths. Maths homework will be focused on our class objectives and spelling words in a list. Homework is handed out on a Friday and should be returned for the following Wednesday so that it can be marked. For the initial half term we will be trialling a grid system of homework. Spellings Spellings are given out and tested by Mr Brooks on a Friday. We will be having 2 spelling groups – some children will have a phonics focus where as the rest of the children will be following spelling patterns from the new spelling programme.

  6. Routines I will upload a copy of our timetable on to the Year 3 webpage so you can see what your child will be learning and when. Important things to remember: • Mrs Coulston Wednesday morning • PE Monday and Friday • Spellings out Friday • Homework out Friday, returned Wednesday

  7. Rules The children follow the class rules that they helped to write and signed in agreement as well as our whole school rules. Our aim is to keep your child happy, secure and safe within the school and we take pride in giving them a rich and positive environment in which to learn and grow. Consequences Rewards Like other classes your child will follow the Traffic light system. They will be given two warnings then they will move onto Amber. Then a further two warnings then a move onto Red. Finally they will lose Golden Time. Children may lose house points/Dojos for behaviour or forgetting diaries/PE kits. At the end of each week: Class certificates. Also Class Dojo = Raffle Tickets Golden Time – 20minutes activity of their choice such as art or an extra play.

  8. Finally throughout the year children will be assessed on progress regularly through on going teacher assessments and also test papers. It is also big aim to encourage more independence this year! Information on progress will be shared at parents evenings, but if you are ever worried please don’t hesitate to ask me. Any questions?
