  5. Proficient readers… Plan and monitor their reading • Preview the text • Set a purpose for reading • Make predictions • Use metacognitive strategies

  6. Proficient readers… activate prior knowledge • Match schema with the new information presented in the text • Evaluate how the text enhances previous understandings

  7. Proficient readers… Generate questions • Ask questions of themselves • Ask questions of the authors • Ask questions about the text • Check for understanding
