  2. Propaganda had a variety of objectives! • Recruitment in the military • Financing the War • Unifying the country • Promote homefront efforts to fight the war

  3. Common Tools used in Wartime Propaganda • Demonization – seeing the enemy as evil and aggressive

  4. “Destroy the Mad Brute - Enlist”

  5. Emotional Appeals – playing on people’s emotions (i.e. fear)

  6. Patriotic Appeals – appeals to people’s pride in their nations by using national symbols

  7. Half-Truths or Lies – Deception or twisting the truth

  8. Catchy Slogans – Use of Memorable phrases (i.e. “Remember the Alamo”)

  9. Evocative Symbols – Appeal to people’s emotions such as flags, mothers and children, enemy uniforms.

  10. “Beat back the Hun with Liberty Bonds”

  11. Humor or Caricatures – captures the viewer’s attention by making the enemy the butt of the joke

  12. The U.S. wasn’t alone. Other countries did it, too, like France This is an ad for bonds. Emprunt National is the name of a bank. “We Got ‘Em” or “We’re Getting them!”

  13. And Germany, too! “Join the Brave Swabian soldiers in the Iron of Stuttgart!” (Stuttgart is a city in Germany.) “Follow us!”
