  2. Who won the dispute? • Duke William of Normandy • Led an army of 6,000 across the English Channel in hundreds of ships and defeated the struggling Harold at the BATTLE OF HASTINGS in 1066 AD

  3. William the Conqueror’s Changes • Gave away land to his French supporters • Appointed sheriffs to police his kingdom • Set up The Great Council to help him run the country (this will eventually become the English Parliament…beginnings of democracy!)

  4. Domesday Book • Had the Domesday Book written—a census of all people and land in England • Great primary source!!!

  5. LONG TERM effects of conquest • The English and French nobility became entwined • Led to future wars over kingship • The English language was influenced by French • Norman French was the language of nobility in England for hundreds of years • Approximately 70% of English adjectives come from French words

  6. Bayeaux Tapestry • Tapestry made to commemorate William’s victory • Like a picture book, it shows the action • One of the few documents of its kind from the Middle Ages • Over 200 feet long and 20 inches wide
