Types of Variables. 6 th , 7 th , & 8 th Science Mrs. Prince’s Class 2013-2014. A variable is……. Anything that can affect the outcome of an experiment. Independent Variable (Manipulated Variable). The tested variable. The one thing that you will change in your experiment.

  2. A variable is……. • Anything that can affect the outcome of an experiment.

  3. Independent Variable(Manipulated Variable) • The tested variable. • The one thing that you will change in your experiment. • One group will get the independent variable and one group will not (called control group). • Plotted on the X-axis.

  4. Dependent Variable(Responding Variable) • The outcome of your experiment. • Your results from your test. • It depends on the other variable. • Often measureable. • Recorded with units. • Plotted on the y-axis.

  5. Controlled Variables • Other variables that you must control or keep the same between your testing groups.

  6. Apply what we have learned… Amanda wants to test the effects of chlorine levels in tap water on plant growth. She will use distilled water with her control group. Amount of sunlight, type of plant, type of soil are constant. What is her…..
