  5. Personal Safety Be Aware of Your Environment: Watch your stuff – and watch for the group! Watch the time. Always venture with others (not alone).

Safety Abroad for the Group *The U.S. State Department decides if we stay or go: Travel Warning www.state.gov www.cdc.gov In-country Contacts Network of Study Abroad Programs Insurance Company Resources *NOTE: I.P. covers cost to move a group to safety, if in danger. If you decide personally to leave the group, you bear all costs and responsibility--and you are still accountable for all of your program costs.

  9. Enrolled as a UWSP student, you are under UWSP conduct rules. UWSP International Programs has the right to withdraw a student from an overseas program due to student conduct that adversely affects the group experience or negatively impacts the university’s relationship with our international partners such as hostels or hotels, tour guides, museums or universities.

  10. Academics Come First! “1. This is an academic program. I am responsible for attendance at all lectures and scheduled trips. . . .”

  11. Take part in discussions. Give all instructors and interpreters their due respect. Act in a professional manner when with a group or in any situation that might reflect upon the group or the university.

  12. Tours are part of class.

  13. Strive to be cognizant of group needs, respect them, and work together so as to meet those needs with a minimum of discomfort for anyone.

  14. Classes take advantage of the sites… Not all of our classrooms are classrooms!

  15. Be on time! Group travel depends on it.

  16. Cooperate with and be willing to assist the group leaders. Pay attention to announcements Recognize that everyone has needs for help and support.

  17. BE ADAPTABLE BE FLEXIBLE

  20. Financial: Aid, Payments and Forms

  21. Program Costs & Payments • Your final program cost is calculated and announced approx. 4-6 weeks before departure. At that time, we finalize group costs and participant numbers with overseas institutions and travel agents, receive final invoices, and lock in exchange rates with our final payments. • Payment Schedule was included in your Acceptance Letter

FINANCIAL AID • Renew your 2011-12 FAFSA no later than April 15—DON’T DELAY! • Revise your award to include your additional study abroad educational expenses with the UWSP Financial Aid Office • Check your current 2010-2011 financial aid award for possible funding due to change in class standing in December—or if you initially declined your direct loan award. • Common types of student loans after Perkins is Direct, Parent PLUS or Alternative/Private Student Loan • Complete loan instructions can be found at www.uwsp.edu/finance/loans.shtm (or call 346-4771).

STUDENT LOANS • Perkins • Awarded on a need basis • Direct (subsidized/unsubsidized) • Increased maximum awards for juniors and seniors is now $7500 for the academic year • Interest rate is fixed 5.6% sub- sidized; 6.8% unsubsidized • Parent Plus Direct • If your parent is interested in borrowing in order to assist paying for your study abroad • Current interest rate is 7.9% plus a 4% processing fee • Alternative Private Student Loan • Repayment not expected until you are out of school • ONLY lending institutions offering the alternative/private student loan program: UWSP Credit Union, Wells Fargo, Chase, Citi, US Bank, Discover • Please make sure to compare interest rates, processing fees, early drop off of co-signor with successful repayments, etc. carefully • Interest rate is variable • Complete instructions on UWSPFinancial Aid website!

  25. RESIDENCY • Tuition surcharge for non-residents is $250 (3 crs) -$1,000 (12 crs) instead of approx. $1,000 - $3,500 for on-campus students • Minnesota resident surcharge around $60-$200 with approved Minnesota reciprocity

FINAL TIDBITS… • Look at your current award on MyPoint, then Finances, Financial Aid Award & Status • Unusual Circumstance Form (loss of income) • www.uwsp.edu/finance under Special Topics; May possibly be eligible for grants • Independent students (24 yrs. +) are eligible for an additional $5000 in unsubsidized Direct loan. • If parent is denied a PLUS Direct, student is then eligible for up to $5000 in an unsubsidized Direct loan. • Individual advising—please bring in your award.
