WHAT IS A FEATURE… • Interesting: • Worth reading on its own merit • Well researched and reported • Professional • The language you use should always follow proper writing conventions • Promotions • Be careful to not “promote” or give free advertising • Puff or softball • Readers grow suspicious if an article feels too soft or vague

  4. TYPES OF FEATURE • News Feature • When you explore a hard news story more because otherwise they go unnoticed. • Information Feature • Profile and Human Interest Feature • Personal Experience and Accomplishment Features • Drawing on your own experience…but consider • Modesty • Newsworthiness • Honesty

  5. LANGUAGE • Use nouns and strong active verbs to reduce subjectivity and keep the story fact-oriented • Use a hook to grab the readers • Quotes can be longer—but pick quotes that really say something interesting and unique • Consider paraphrasing incident information

  6. BRAINSTORMING AN IDEA • Decide what type of feature you want to write out of the 4 • Possible ideas • Feature on one of the many clubs, teams • Feature on a teacher that you find particularly fascinating, or someone who you know is doing something interesting beyond teaching • Feature on a student who is doing something really unique—science award winner, artist, etc.
