RESEARCH COMPANY/ORGANIZATION INFORMATIONReasons • Employers Perceive “Researching the Company” as a • Critical Factor in Evaluating Candidates • Researching Reflects Interest, Energy, Initiative, Motivation and Enthusiasm • A Majority of Your Peers (ie, Your Competition) Will Not Do This • Target Your Resume and Conversation for each Employer • Match Your Experience, Academic Background and • Skills to the Position(s) You’re Interested In Career Services UW-Whitewater

ADDITIONAL PREPARATION TIPS • Sign Up for a Mock Interview at Career Services • Dress Professionally • Read “Dressing for the Job” in Job Choices – Diversity Edition 2004 (pp 63-64) for Specific Tips on How to Dress • Consider the Culture of the Companies/Organizations You’ll be Speaking With • Err on the Side of Conservative Dress! • Secure a Professional Notebook • Create Multiple Copies of Your Targeted Resume(s) Career Services UW-Whitewater

WORKING THE FAIR Setup: Each Employer Will Have a Separate Booth with Display and Table to Meet with Students and Provide Information • Make Contact With As Many Employers as Possible • Don’t Limit Yourself to Talking With a Few Employers • Prioritize the Employers You’re Going to • Visit into “A-B-C” • Plan to Meet With One/Two “C” Employer(s)… Then Go After Those “A” Employers Career Services UW-Whitewater

WORKING THE FAIR • Make Good Use of Your Time • If You Encounter a Long Line at an Employer of Interest, Seek Out Employers Who Are Less Busy and Then Return • While Waiting in a Short Line, Review the Information You Have Picked Up from Other Employer Tables • Interact With Other Candidates by Exchanging Information About Employers Each Has Made Contact With Career Services UW-Whitewater

  9. WORKING THE FAIR In Most Cases, Your Opportunity to Talk With each Employer Will be Brief. You Will Have 3-5 Minutes to Present Your Qualifications • When Meeting with Employers: • Greet each Employer With a Firm Handshake • Show Enthusiasm and Confidence - Smile! • Give Concise Answers to Employer Questions. Be Prepared to Cite Successful Examples of Your Experience in Internships, Summer Jobs, Clubs/Organizations, etc. that Match/Support the Major Job Functions and Skills of Your Position(s) of Interest. WORKING THE FAIR • Prepare Questions for Each Employer • Your Best Questions are Those That Are Created From Doing Your Research Ask the Employer About the Hiring Process and Timelines Ask for the Employer’s Business Card - You’ll Need the Information on the Card for Follow-Up Correspondence Thank the Interviewer for His/Her Time Career Services UW-Whitewater

  11. POST FAIR MUSTS Forward a Follow-up Letter or Email to each Employer in Which You are Still Interested. See “The Art of Writing Job Search Letters” in Job Choices –Diversity Edition 2004 (pp 35-41) • Remind Each Employer of Your Qualifications Relative to the Experience and Skills the They are Seeking • Affirm Your Continued Interest in Working for his/her Organization Career Services UW-Whitewater

POST FAIR MUSTS Formal Job Offers Are Rarely Extended on the Day of the Fair • Employers Will Typically Invite You to Their Home Office for an Interview before Extending You an Offer • If you Receive a Job Offer on the Day of the Fair, We Strongly Recommend That You Ask for Some Time to Consider the Offer • Consult with Career Services, Ms Briscoe and/or Significant Others for Feedback/Advice Career Services UW-Whitewater
