Making an impact… • Commit to the long term • Some of the most valuable impacts don’t become apparent until 5 to 10 years on • Document, document, document so that you can identify & evidence this • Build on previous work • Revisit your data, expand on previous methods, justify diversions • Cleary articulate the common threads in your work • Commit to (& believe in the value of) constant stakeholder liaison • Understand your communities of interest & establish meaningful relationships • (‘Marriages of convenience’ rarely work nor lead to impact) • An international outlook can be relevant to any project, no matter its scale • Communication: be creative, be thorough, be insistent! • ‘Communication’ per se is not impact, but it is critical to achieve it • Use any tool at hand… and don’t shy away of relying on ‘personal talents’
