  2. Essential Question • What was happening in America between the years of 1750-1800 that influenced American Literature?

  3. Sub-Questions • 1. How did the focus on war influence American Literature during this time? • 2. How did writings such as the Autobiography show that literature had changed since the Puritans? • 3. What events helped break the bond between British Literature and American Literature? • 4. How is the American Dream of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness expressed in the writing of the time?

  4. Benjamin Franklin • Wrote his autobiography—first one to start the genre • Aphorisms—Used in Poor Richard’s Almanac—Same idea used today in Farmer’s Almanac. • Published Philadelphia Gazette—The first daily newspaper.

  5. Thomas Paine published Common Sense—the pamphlet that helped start the American Revolution Wrote The Crisis and argued for the American Revolution She was a young slave girl who was taught to read and write by her master. She published her first poem at the age of 13. She became famous for her poem about George Washington Paine …and Wheatley

Paine called King George highwayman, housebreaker, murderer He called England a foreign country He compared the British treatment to slavery Henry maintains that to not fight makes us weak--people who do fights are brave and vigilant.
