  1. Metadata Case Studies What are they good for?

  2. Introduction • Background to paper • Why look at this topic? • “Expected” Uses • Useful characteristics • Examples of “Secondary” uses • Questions about next steps

  3. Background • Observed a variety of cases where case studies (or extracts from them) proved useful beyond the “METIS community” • Examples in later slides (& Section III of paper) • METIS sessions regularly reviews what's in case studies, and common across them, but not how the information is (and/or could be) used • May be relevant to • “value proposition” for case studies • writing for, & promoting to, audience

  4. “Expected” Uses • Not explicitly documented in METIS wiki • Presentation at 2008 work session summarised • To get materials for part D : Implementation, but can provide input to all parts of the CMF • Transfer of knowledge & experience among community • No doubt these are primary, but are other uses worth considering?

  5. Useful characteristics • Information is in the public domain • Reviewed on a professional basis but not as formal as an official publication • Designed for professionals outside the organisation • Can provide • Context • Specific content to be reused & extended • Few publicly accessible alternative sources of information in regard to most NSIs? • Often not ideal but closest to “fit for purpose”?

  6. Secondary Uses • Some examples • preparing for international visits • information for vendors • metadata practitioners beyond METIS • information for potential recruits

  7. Questions • Is it relevant to consider secondary use further? • If so, • capture additional uses from other NSIs (eg via wiki page or survey of case study contacts)? • encourage NSIs to recognise & realise additional value from case studies? • provide guidance on secondary use (eg citation, suggested restrictions) • Should case studies be regarded as akin to “professional” blog entries, “professional papers” or official statements by NSIs?
