They hoped a ship would pick them up, instead they endured a torturous winter of rain and cold. John Jacob Astor founded Fort Astoria for fur-trading in 1811. First US Post office west of the Rocky Mountains was established in Astoria 1847. The Astoria-Megler bridge was completed in 1966. Astoria is the western terminus of the Trans-America bicycle route. The musical, Shanghai’d in Astoria is about Astoria’s history and has been performed every year in Astoria since 1984. Astoria was the setting for the movie, The Goonies. Other movies filmed here include, Free Willy, Kindergarten Cop, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III, and Into the Wild.
