  1. Hindi 1a - lesson 5b आपको मालूम है कि रवि कहाँ है? Do you know where Ravi is?

  2. आपको ‘रानी मुखर्जी’ पसंद है? • Which film star do you really like? Pick one. • Go round the class seeing if you can find others that also like that film star. • Scribble down a list of the stars people like. • Then we will discover who found out the most star’s names. (They don’t have to be bollywood)

  3. मालूम है / पता है‘to know’ • मालूम है and पता है mean ‘to know some information’ (पता है is more informal) • the information is known ‘to’ the knower and follows the word कि which means ‘that’ (NB not interchangable with वह ‘that’) • person + को मालूम है + कि + information • For instance: मुझको मालूम है कि वह यहाँ नही है • ‘I know that he is not here.’

  4. मालूम नहीं ‘don’t know’ • To say that somebody does not know something add नहीं after मालूम or पता • The है is often dropped in ‘don’t know’ • For instance: • रवि को मालूम नहींकिआज रानी मुखर्जी एनयूएस में है। • ‘Ravi does not know that Rani Mukherjee is in NUS today.’

  5. डॉन में कौन है? Who is in ‘Don’? • Work in groups of five. • All pick a film (can be not Bollywood). • Then each asks the others if they know who is in it on this model: • क्या आपको मालूम है कि डॉन में कौन है?Do you know who is in ‘Don’? • At the end we will share each groups knowledge about the starts in one film • हमको मालूम है कि डॉन में अमिताभ, ज़ीनत अमान..

  6. ठीक है, है न? ‘That’s right, isn’t it?’ • Add है न after a statement to turn it into a tag question, a kind of question that is trying to get the person to confirm that the statement is true. • उसको पता नहीं कि आज वह यहाँ है, है न? • ‘S/He does not know that s/he is here today, does s/he?’ • its more complicated in English than Hindi!

  7. काफ़ी ‘fairly’, ‘enough’ • काफ़ी before adjectives tends to mean ‘fairly’ it qualifies degree. • आज मौसम काफ़ी गरम है। • Today the weather is fairly hot. • काफ़ी before nouns tends to mean ‘enough’ it qualifies quantity. • आज मेरे पास काफ़ी पैसा नहीं है। • Today I don’t have enough money.

  8. कैसा ‘what sort/kind of’ or ‘how’ • कैसा can mean ‘what sort/kind of’ it is a type of adjective and changes form • The context suggests the type of answer • यह कैसी क़लम है?(काली / लाल etc.)What sort of a pen is this? (black/red) • वै कैसे समोसे हैं?(शाकाहारी / माँसाहारी)What sort of samosas are those? • वह कैसा अख़बार है? (अच्छा / ख़राब) • What sort of a paper is that? (Good/bad)

  9. वह कैसी फ़िल्म है? How is that film? • In pairs create a dialogue between a film star and an interviewer. • The dialogue must include forms from today, i.e: • क्या आपको मालूम था कि...Did you know that… • वह कैसी फ़िल्म थी...Howwas that film? • काफ़ी अच्छी थी, है न? It was fairly good, wasn’t it? • Then we will hear some of the interviews…
