  2. Project objectives Overall project goal: to develop tools for selection for improved health of commercial sows Specific objectives: 1. Phenotyping of crossbred gilts under acclimation conditions on commercial farms. 2. Phenotyping of gilts following acclimation for subsequent health, reproduction, productivity, longevity, and mortality (sow, piglet).

Benefits to producers • Reduced cost of production with improved sow health and productivity. • Identification of early life traits for selection or sow management on-farm. • Improvement of sow health leading to improved sow longevity and welfare. • Development of a data resource and collection system to enable future research initiatives (e.g. from disease outbreaks), surveillance and disease risk management.

  6. Gilt entry • 25-50 gilts will be selected and identified for the project from 4 gilt deliveries to the farm (200 project gilts total). • Blood samples: Day 0 and Day 30 • Body weights: Day 0 and Day 30 • Treatments, vaccination history • Feed/water medication • Mortalities and death reasons

  7. Post breeding Post breeding • Blood samples: 30 days and 60 days post breeding • All health treatments, mortality and death reasons will be recorded (post-mortem examination (preferred)) Weaning • Blood samples will be collected at weaning for up to 4 parities

  8. Production data Standard PIGCHAMP data • dates (breeding, farrowing, weaning, culling) • service sire tattoo/identification, • parity number, • number (total born , alive, mummies, weaned) • net number of pigs fostered per sow, • piglet death date and reason, • Culling reason • date of sow death and reason (post-mortem examination preferred)

  9. Responsibility of nucleus farm • Provide information on sample and data collection • Verify collection techniques and data • Provide technician to assist with weighing and blood collection and thirftiness scoring • Provide materials for collection of blood sampling • Provide scale for weighing

  10. Responsibility of production farm • Assist in sample and data collection in regards to: • Blood Collection • Weights • Collect and provide treatment and health recording • Collect and provide production records

  11. Duration • October 1, 2011 until all data has been collected or December 31, 2013.
