Early LIfe • Francis Drake was born between 1540 and 1544 in Devonshire, England • Drake went to sea for the first time when he was 18 with the Hawkins family, and by the 1560s he earned command of his own ship • Drake and his cousin, John Hawkins, sailed to Africa to join the fledgling slave trade

  3. Expeditions • Drake had two successful expeditions to the west of Indies. • Queen Elizabeth caught the attention of Drakes expedition and granted him privateers commission. • Drake got commissioned from Queen Elizabeth to lead around South America in 1577

  4. Voyages • Drakes voyages were legendary, making him a hero to the English but a pirate to the Spaniards to whom he was known as El Draque, Draque being the Spanish pronunciation of "Drake” • He made three voyages On one of his voyages he went to a slave trade in Africa, on another one he brought back Spanish treasure which got him a reputation as a leading privateer. • He landed on the island of Cano, off the coast of southern Mexico. In North America, then crossed the Pacific Ocean and sailed by Indonesia, through the Indian Ocean, past the Cape of Good Hope, and back to Plymouth, England, in 1580. When he returned, the Queen rewarded Drake with a large sum of money.

Conclusion • We learned a lot about Francis Drake and how he went to many different countries. • We found some surprising information about how he circumnavigated the globe, and when he died off the coast of Panama. • Before this PowerPoint, we didn’t know who Francis Drake was but we are glad we learned about a legendary explorer.  • Francis Drake’s cousin named John Hawkins sailed with him in some explorations. We would like to learn more about him.
