Where did the rubbish come from? • The household waste has increased dramatically the people’s living habit has changed. • Many working mums always buy take-away meals in polystyrene boxes instead of cooking at home. • Since 1990, household waste in Hong Kong has risen from 0.97 to 1.35kilograms per day.
Why there were so many rubbish? • People are too lazy or find it troublesome to separate the household waste. • People just put all the rubbish together and don’t care where they go.
Where did the rubbish go to? • The rubbish will be pressed into 40-cubic-metre blocks in the West Kowloon transfer station in Lai Chi Kok before going to the landfill. • Every day, there are over 6,000 tonnes of new wastes arriving at the Nim Wan landfill.
How will the rubbish be? • Blocks of rubbish are dumped into pits the size of football pitches. • After the pit is full, the waste is covered with plastic sheets and dirt to reduce the bad smell.
Landfills • At present, there are three major landfills in Hong Kong. They will be full by 2015. • The soil, drinking water and the sea may be polluted by the rubbish buried in the landfill.
How will our environment be? • If people continue with their living habits and do not reduce producing waste, more landfills will be required. • Building landfill is not a good solution to environmental pollution. • In order to live green, people should stop producing too much wastes and reduce the wastes as much as possible.
Every Hong Kong people has the responsibility to protect our environment. We have the following suggestions: • When we go shopping, we should bring our own shopping bag. • Turning off the car engine when waiting. • Participating more green activities e.g. tree planting. • Using a sheet of paper on both sides. • Using re-chargeable batteries.
The End Thank you!
