  3. Alfred Adler • Inferiority Complex-Behavior is meant to conquer childhood feelings of inferiority. Triggers a strive for superiority. • *Fulfillment of the person, in comparison to others. • Crippled in his youth

Karen Horney • Kids feel hopelessness during youth because they are dependent on others for their needs. • Strive for love and security. • Disputed “Penis Envy.” • “Womb envy”- Men actually envy women because they are more useful in child-reading. • Women have more personal and political restrictions.

Carl Jung • Worked with Freud then separated himself. • Collective Unconscious- memories we have inherited from our human & nonhuman ancestors, “universal experiences.” • Archetypes- initial version of something, then changed over time. • mothers, fathers, hero, maiden, wise old man, witch, faithful dog, enduring horse

  7. 1. Projective Tests • Subject is shown an ambiguous stimulus and then asked to describe or tell a story. • Projection of interests/ conflicts.

Rorschach Inkblot Test • Intent: Measure inner feelings and conflicts based on interpretations of ambiguous inkblots. • Format: 10 inkblots, record interpretations • If we see aggressive weapons or animals Aggressive • See our self reflected self-centered • Problems: • Not reliable, no universal way to score. Not successful in predicting behavior. • Useful: • Violence potential, diagnostic tool, interview icebreaker. • Still loved by Psychological community, used often.

  9. 3. Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) • Intent: Measure personality, achievement, power and affiliation needs through story telling. • Format: 20 pictures, patient asked to make up a story about what’s going on. • Subject unknowingly makes up story about him or herself!

MMPI Test (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory) • Intent: Diagnose clinical conditions & measure certain personality dimensions. • Format: 550 T/F Questions (see examples) • Measures answers against those who are already diagnosed with disorders. • Most widely used projective personality test!

When someone does me a wrong I feel I should pay him back if I can, just for the principle of the thing.29. I am bothered by acid stomach several times a week

Issues with Freud and Psychoanalytic Perspective • Few objective observations and testable hypotheses. • Personality Dev. is lifelong, not just in childhood. • Little support for defense mechanisms • Today’s research doubts existence of repression. • *Though research on stress does show damage to memory centers.
