This day is integral because the prosperity of a nation is in the hands of the youth. They are the building block of a nation and have the power to make a considerable impact on the machinery of the country. This is why they must be given a positive and productive platform where they can perform well and achieve commendable successes. This scenario is only possible when, from a young age, the youth is protected and encouraged to strive for a promising future.

  2. Unfortunately, such is not the case for underprivileged children in India as Census 2011 shows that India has over 12 million married children, out of which 70% are girls. This staggering statistic is a wake-up call for everyone to join hands and help safeguard children from getting exploited at such a tender age. In rural as well as urban belts, children are married off to ease the burden of the family and help with the many financial constraints. Child marriage in India is still considered to be a solution to poverty and deprivation. UNICEF 2014 highlights the fact that 1 out of 3 child brides in the world is from India. Children continue to be married off at a tender age instead of being sent to school to receive an education. Girls, in particular, are pushed towards a life of exploitation and violence where they end up becoming young mothers, face several issues related to health and nutrition, illiteracy etc. Life opportunities also significantly diminish when children are illegally married off and snatched off of their right to a happy and healthy childhood. CRY, India’s top NGO, has been working hard to address the issue of child marriage with varied stakeholders of the society, including the government, parents, and varied policymakers.
