  1. Marriott and How he has inspired others Project Communications Management & Leadership Week 12 Miles Cline

  2. Early Days in the Hospitality Business It all began in J.W. Marriott opened his first A-W root beer stand in 1927- He soon expanded that on shop into a chain of restaurants that were named Hot Shoppes - they operated until 1993 -

  3. Commitment to quality and the customer During the Great Depression, Hot Shoppes were able to attract a steady stream of customers with good quality food and low prices. In the late 1930’s Hot Shoppe began to deliver boxed lunches to American and Eastern Airline passengers at near by airports. By 1960 Hot Shoppe had earned such a good reputation for quality food that there were 100 Hot Shoppes restaurants, cafeterias, and flight kitchens in 11 states.

  4. Recognized throughout the service industry for his hands-on management style Marriott has built a highly regarded culture that stresses the importance of Marriott’s people and recognizes the value they bring to the organization This has been a culture that has existed for more than 50 years that started with J.W. Marriott Sr. and is carried on today with his son who is in charge of the company. Today some 300,000 people worldwide are proudly wearing a Marriott International name badge and are-serving guests in Marriott managed and franchised properties. 19 Brands around the Globe (3,700 plus properties in over 73 countries and territories.)

  5. Set of values to live by • Put People First We provide opportunity to and take care of our associates, even in the most challenging times. • Pursue Excellence We have an unwavering passion for providing outstanding service and customer experiences. • Embrace Change We are committed to innovate and remain relevant to meet the evolving needs of our customers and our business. • Act With Integrity We are proud of our reputation for honesty and fairness. • Serve Our World Our purpose and global reach give us real opportunities to make a difference in communities around the world.

  6. Why others admire and follow his lead Bill Marriott leads his company with several guiding points. • Listening is key to innovation, when you open your ears it opens your mind too. • Training is essential it is important to fostering innovation. • It is important to reward those with the small and large ideas it will spark innovation throughout the company • It is important for the boss to participate in meeting but not to influence he meeting • Meet with your employees to understand how they are doing, you can not lead unless you know how the rest of the company is doing first hand.

  7. Why did he inspire us? • How did the leader influence or inspire them? Why did they follow? 6. How did the leader inspire you? • Yes Marriott International is a Multi-national company but it is still run with family values. J.W. Marriott believes in treating his employees as much like family and they will be loyal and be willing to give you 110% with out being asked. • A good example of this that has been around for 70 plus year is staff nurses. It came about then one day his dad had four or five employees and one of them didn’t show up. And he had to do all the work that person was supposed to be doing. He came to the conclusion that if I don’t take good care of his employees, he was going to be doing all the work. So he established right then and there back in 1928 a culture that said take good care of your people and they’ll take care of the customer and the customer will return.

  8. This is why he inspires us still… Bill Marriott may not know everyone’s name in the company, but he does take it upon himself to get to know as may as possible. The Marriot Marquis in NYC for example he got to know almost every employee in the hotel. Not only did he know every employee by name but he also knew their favorite sports team. And they all thought he was just terrific because he took a personal interest in them. Marriott celebrates it employee, whether it is at the Annual excellence awards or celebrating its employees diverse culture. Marriott earned a perfect 100% ranking on the 2015 corporate equality index ("Best Places to Work," 2014). They were also awarded the Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility (HACR), a leading Hispanic advocacy group, ("Marriott Celebrated for Inclusive Culture," 2014).
