DEFINITION • Inflammatory disease of the myocardium caused by infectious and noninfectious agents
CAUSES OF MYOCARDITIS • RNA-viruses: Picorna (Coxsackie A, B, Echo, Polio), Paramyxo (Measles, Mumps), HCV, Toga (Dengue Fever, Yellow Fever, Rubella) • DNA-viruses: adenoviruses, parvovirus B19, herpesviruses (herpesvirus-6, Cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr, Varicella), HIV • 15-20% of virus-related myocarditis is caused by enteroviruses • 3-6% - incidence of myocarditis in viral infections • Viruses are detected in >70% of patients with clinically suspected myocarditis and dilated cardiomyopathy
Cardiomyopathies • Cardiomyopathy (1980): Heart muscle disease of unknown cause • Cardiomyopathy (1995): Disease of the myocardium associated with cardiac dysfunction
