  2. Introduction • One-Night Stand • Extra-Pair Copulations • Hypothesis: Evolutionary benefits of multiple mates have been proposed for females. Such a female adaptation would be that women find the experience of a one-night stand as affectively positive as men.

  3. Research Questions • 1. Are there differences between men and women in the positivity or negativity of their morning after evaluations of one-night stands? • 2. Are there differences in the positivity or negativity of the experience between unmated and mated individuals? • 3. Is there a greater negativity among mated women than mated men?

  4. Methods • Online Questionnaire • Questions about how participant felt the morning after. • 6 positive and 6 negative evaluations of experience. • N=1,743, Men: 998, Women: 745 • Majority between ages 26-60

  5. Results • 1. Between men and women: • Women reported more negativity after one-night stand. • 2. Between mated and unmated: • Mated reported higher sexual gratification but more negativity after one-night stand. • 3. Between mated women and mated men: • Both reported feeling happy/lustful during but more regretful afterwards for fear of detection.

  6. Critical Review • Large sample size increased statistic power and validity • Men are more likely than women to secretly want their friends to hear about the one-night stand and feel successful • Female’s reactions to one-night stands based on reproductive value of male. • Elapsed time between one night stand and study may have effected accuracy. • 12% of participants were dropped due to sexual orientation. • EPC v.   8. Discussion • 1. 59% of respondents participated in a one-night stand and that women, to a lesser extent then men, may regret their actions afterwards. What do you think are some of the differences in motivation, including the likelihood of either sex participating in a one-night stand at the next opportunity? • 2. Women specifically look for courtship when looking for a long term partner. Women also feel a loss of pride and self-esteem after a one-night stand. Why are females still willing to take part in one night stands despite of a lack of courtship and self degrading feelings afterwards?
