  2. Getting a list of Academic Words 1) Copy your text onto the AWL Highlighter (Search AWL Highlighter on Google) http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/alzsh3/acvocab/awlhighlighter.htm Choose level 10 to get more Academic Words.

  3. Select your Academic Words You might get a lot of academic words in bold. Choose 5 and write the down on a piece of paper or on a Word document. This is what the AWL Highlighter text looks after you submit it:

  4. Get Collocations Collocations are words that go well together. Get 3 collocations for your 5 words by using this dictionary: http://forbetterenglish.com/index.cgi

  5. Get Collocations Write down 5 different collocations for each one of the academic words you chose. • You do not need to copy the whole sentence. Just 3 collocations. • Make sure to use www.learnersdictionary.comif you want to understand the meaning of any new words.

  6. Make a Set of Vocabulary Words Now that you have 3 collocations for each one of your 5 words, go to www.quizlet.com and create a new vocabulary set.

  7. Adding Collocations to your Set Add collocations to your set by writing your main word on the left and the five collocates on the right. You can put a forward slash, this -> / to make sure you know if the main word comes before or after the collocation. For example, the / comes before the words of excellence because we say “tradition of excellence”. On the other hand, the / comes after the word local because we say “local tradition”.

  8. Adding Collocations to your Set This is how your set will look before you finish it.

  9. Adding Collocations to your Set This is how your set will look before you hit the “create set” button

  10. Your finished set When you are done with your set, make sure to spend some time practicing your new vocabulary words! Get your friend’s Quizlet address and share your sets with them so you can compare and learn even more words.

  11. Congratulations! You now have a new way to teach yourself vocabulary and have a higher level of English  Please email me at laurasoracco@gmail.comif you have any questions.
