SEPA PHILOSOPHY • Encourages and supports partnershipsbetween scientists and clinicians with educators, community organizations, museums and science centers to: • Increase the participation of diversified generation of young people in clinical and basic research careers • Improve K-12 and public understanding of, benefit from and support for, NIH funded medical research

  3. SEPA MODELS • Formal (~50 projects) • K-12 students, teachers, parents • Small numbers, high contact mode • Community outreach • Informal (~20 projects) • Science Centers and Museums • Huge numbers, moderate contact mode • Public outreach

SEPA and the Pittsburgh CTSI West Virginia Health Sciences and Technology Academy (HSTA) Student Design Public Health Clinical Trials • HSTA Summer Academy 2007 • 219 students & 19 high school teachers • Academic 2007 • 100 students and teachers in 12 WV counties • Basic clinical trial protocol disseminated by clinicians and HSTA students to: • ~ 700 9th-12th grade students and their parents • Community service projects reaching into the many county populations

  8. Community Based Clinical Research An Untapped Opportunity Ann Chester, PHD, Robert A. Branch, MD • Intense one-week summer workshop for 24 students (10th to 11th) • West Virginia University • Topic = community-based clinical research, research ethics, and clinical study design. • Ethics-based modules for all teachers and students (n=150). • With oversight from the WVU and CTSI clinical research mentors • HSTA students drafted protocols and consent forms • Worked with West Virginia University’s Institutional Board for approval. • Fall ’08 – Spring ’08 HSTA-SEPA science club CBPR students • Participants provided written informed consent for access to confidential health care information on obesity, diabetes and attitudes toward interventions to modify food choices and exercise • 1241 study participants were enrolled

Branch, MD • BMI = 0.85 age corrected • BMI of 25.5 = 6% developed diabetes. • BMI = 1.05 age corrected • BMI = 31.5 = 16% (2.5X) • BMI = 1.38 age corrected • BMI = 41.4 = 22% (3.7X) • >50% of this study population has BMI >30 • High prevalence of diabetes in their communities • Student CBCR study results: High BMI Diabetes • Serious motivation for these students to plan and conduct intervention strategies.
