  2. Translation • Teach and encourage these things. If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not devote himself to the healthy words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching in accordance with godliness, he is conceited, understanding nothing, but instead he has sick cravings for debate and disputes about words, out of which is produced envy, discord, reviling slander, suspicion, wicked evil and constant friction among the corrupted minds of men who are being deprived of the truth, believing that godliness is a means of gain.

Detailed Analysis • “Teach and encourage these things.” • What are the ‘things’ Paul keeps reminding Timothy to teach? • Some scholars have here argued that Paul is commanding Timothy to teach the words of the preceding verses on the subject of slaves honoring their masters (Knight, Walvoord, Zuck) • Timothy is being reminded to teach all of the words of Christ, not just the subject of the previous passage.

  8. Detailed Analysis • “If anyone teaches another doctrine” • This is the protasis to the conditional statement • The use of the word τὶς • The verb ἑτεροδιδασκαλεῖ, literally meaning to teach other doctrine
