  1. Christ Our Passover LambExodus 12:1-13 • The exodus is the story of Israel’s salvation. • The exodus is also a foreshadow of the salvation God offers to everyone who trusts in Christ. • The Passover was a time of remembrance as well as a time of celebration of deliverance. • The Passover points to Christ.

  2. The Unleaven Bread: • A Sinless Saviour • Exodus 12:14–15 (NIV) “This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord—a lasting ordinance. For seven days you are to eat bread made without yeast. On the first day remove the yeast from your houses, for whoever eats anything with yeast in it from the first day through the seventh must be cut off from Israel.

  3. Practical: time saving factor - the Israelites had to be ready to leave Egypt quickly • Spiritual meaning: • Exodus 34:25 (NIV) “Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me along with anything containing yeast…” • Yeast was associated with sin and evil • Matthew 16:6 (NIV) “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

  4. Unleavened bread  pointed to Jesus, God’s sinless sacrifice • Hebrews 4:15 (NIV) For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. • Pilate declared: “I find no basis for a charge against him.” John 18:38 (NIV) • 2 Corinthians 5:21 (NIV) - God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

  5. 2. The Bitter Herbs: A Suffering Saviour • Awful tasting greens reminded the people about the bitterness of their life of slavery • Bitter herbs  pointed ahead to the Messiah who faced suffering • Isaiah 53:4,5 (NIV) - Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.

  6. Luke 22:44 (NIV) - And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. • his disciples deserted him. • he was spit on, blindfolded, punched and struck repeatedly in the face • flogged with whips that tore the flesh off his body • crown of thorns pushed down on his head • forced to carry his own cross

  7. The Passover Lamb: • A Submissive Saviour • First Passover: blood was spread on the doorposts of the Israelite homes so that the angel of death would “pass over” and spare the life of the firstborn son. • 1 Corinthians 5:7 (NIV) - Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. • John 1:29 (NIV) “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! • Jesus was submissive to God’s will and gave his own life to pay for the sin of the world.

  8. Isaiah 53:7 (NIV) - …he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. • Matthew 27:12–14 (NIV) When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer. Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?” But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.

  9. He suffered silently as they interrogated him – accused him – mocked him. • Jesus is our substitute: He died so that we don’t have to face spiritual death. • God instituted this practice of a substitutionary sacrifice •  an innocent animal who died a substitutionary death to cover over guilt and shame

  10. God’s forgiveness from sin through the sacrifice of an innocent substitute became a familiar practice. • One sacrifice for one man – Pre-Moses • One sacrifice for one family - Passover • One sacrifice for one nation – Day of • Atonement • One sacrifice for the whole world – Jesus • Christ • John 1:29 (NIV) “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

  11. Communion Sunday: Remember Jesus • Our Sinless Saviour • remove the “yeast” – sin from our lives – set ourselves apart as a holy people • Our Suffering Saviour • to follow Christ will involve suffering • Our Submissive Saviour • surrender all we have and all we are to him – dying to ‘self’ daily
