  1. Essay Introduction Structure Introductions have a particular structure – an order that you use to introduce what you will be writing in your essay. First, you make a STATEMENT (your answer to the question). Then you EXPLAIN any important words or ideas in the statement (explain who or what the key words in the statement represent, in your own words) Then you LIST the three points you will make in your body paragraphs (list them in the same order they will appear in the body of your essay) Finally, you make a COMMENT to sum up your own opinion on this topic and/or to state the source you will use for your evidence

  2. Essay Introduction Structure Introductions have a particular structure – an order that you use to introduce what you will be writing in your essay. First, you make a STATEMENT (your answer to the question). i.e. Patricia Grace wrote the stories Going for the Breadand Butterfliesto help readers learn about the theme of whanau. Then you EXPLAIN any important words or ideas in the statement (explain what key words in the statement represent, in your own words) i.e. Patricia Grace’s stories shows us how important whanau is and helps us realise that families are all different from each other. Then you LIST the three points you will make in your body paragraphs (list them in the same order they will appear in the body of your essay) i.e. We learn that whanau is important because we can go to them when we are hurt or need help, whanau will always stick up for us, and that one important role for whanau is to help each other understand the world around them. Finally, you make a COMMENT to sum up your own opinion on this topic and/or to state the source you will use for your evidence i.e. This theme is relevant to readers, because everyone has experience of being part of a whanau, just like the characters in Going for the Bread and Butterflies..

  3. Essay Introduction – Done! Patricia Grace wrote the stories Going for the Bread and Butterflies to help readers learn about the theme of whanau. Patricia Grace’s story shows us how important whanau is and helps us realise that families are all different from each other. We learn that whanau is important because we can go to them when we are hurt or need help, whanau will always stick up for us, and that one important role for whanau is to help each other understand the world around them. This theme is relevant to readers, because everyone has experience of being part of a whanau, just like the characters in Going for the Breadand Butterflies.

  4. SEXC Essay Body Paragraph Structure Essay body paragraphs have a particular structure which you can remember using the letters SEXC. SEXC stands for the order that you write down your ideas in a body paragraph for an essay. First, you make a STATEMENT (your answer to the question). Then you EXPLAIN your statement in more detail (try to convince us your answer is sensible) Then you give an EXAMPLE to prove your statement (show us that your answer came from something you read or saw in the text) Finally, you make a COMMENT to sum up your own opinion on this topic

  5. SEXC Essay Body Paragraph ExampleHere is a set of body paragraph guidelines (in white) and examples sentences for each part (in green). First, you make a STATEMENT (your answer to the question). From reading of Mereana’s experience with bullying in Going for the Bread, we learn that whanau is important because we can go to them when we are hurt or need help. Then you EXPLAIN your statement in more detail (try to convince us your answer is sensible) Mereana is shoved and cut by two neighbourhood bullies on the way to the shop. Her mother comforts her, cleans her cut, and conisders how she might take Mereana to the doctor. Then you give an EXAMPLE to prove your statement (show us that your answer came from something you read or saw in the text) When Mereana’s mother “sat Mereana in a chair and told he to hold the facecloth against the cut” we can tell she is trying to comfort her daughter. We read that “She had tried to go down the track when she’d heard Mereanacrying” which shows that she rushes to help Mereana, when it seems she is upset and hurt. Finally, you make a COMMENT to sum up your own opinion on this topic   Mereana’s Mother reminds me of my whanau; they are also willing to do whatever they can to comfort and help me when I need it. This role is one of the most important things whanau can do for each other.

  6. SEXC Essay First Body Paragraph – Done! Once we remove the guidelines we’ve created a great first body paragraph for our essay From reading of Mereana’s experience with bullying in Going for the Bread, we learn that whanau is important because we can go to them when we are hurt or need help. Mereanais shoved and cut by two neighbourhood bullies on the way to the shop. Her mother comforts her, cleans her cut, and conisders how she might take Mereana to the doctor. When Mereana’s mother “sat Mereana in a chair and told he to hold the facecloth against the cut” we can tell she is trying to comfort her daughter. We read that “She had tried to go down the track when she’d heard Mereana crying” which shows that she rushes to help Mereana, when it seems she is upset and hurt.Mereana’sMother reminds me of my whanau; they are also willing to do whatever they can to comfort and help me when I need it. This role is one of the most important things whanau can do for each other.

  7. SEXC Essay Body Paragraph ExampleHere is another set of body paragraph guidelines (in white) and examples sentences for each part (in green). First, you make a STATEMENT (your answer to the question). The granddaughter in the story Butterflies has whanau to help her understand the world around her. Then you EXPLAIN your statement in more detail (try to convince us your answer is sensible) Her teacher tells her that she shouldn’t kill butterflies, when she has written a story about killing them in the garden with her grandfather. She doesn’t know why the teacher corrected her that way, but her grandfather explains why the teacher said that to her. Then you give an EXAMPLE to prove your statement (show us that your answer came from something you read or saw in the text) “Because you see,” her grandfather tells her, “your teacher, she buy all her cabbages from the supermarket and that’s why.”. He shows her that it is because the teacher does not garden like they do, and perhaps she doesn’t know that white butterflies can be pests. Finally, you make a COMMENT to sum up your own opinion on this topic   The granddaughter in Butterflies is lucky to be living with grandparents that help her to learn about looking after a garden, growing her own food, and to understand the ideas of others who don’t live the same way.

  8. SEXC Essay Third Body Paragraph – Done! Once we remove the guidelines we’ve created a great third body paragraph for our essay The granddaughter in the story Butterflies has whanau to help her understand the world around her. Her teacher tells her that she shouldn’t kill butterflies, when she has written a story about killing them in the garden with her grandfather. She doesn’t know why the teacher corrected her that way, but her grandfather explains why the teacher said that to her. “Because you see,” her grandfather tells her, “your teacher, she buy all her cabbages from the supermarket and that’s why.”.
