Various areas where Trade Statistics are used African Development Bank Group • Track and assess progress on Regional integration and trade particularly • Needed for the preparation of the Regional Integration strategy Paper (RISP) of the Bank • Intra African Trade and share of Africa in World Trade are 2 key indicators used to assess the performance of ADF-cycles • Trade statistics are presented in the Country Statistical profiles (CStP) whose purpose is to define and design the AfDB strategy to strengthen the development of statistics in African country • Analysis of intra African trade is part of the Country Strategy Paper (CSP) of the Bank in its regional member countries • Data are presented in the AfDB Data Portal under Regional integration section • Data are used in the Working papers produced by AfDB’s Economists network and the African Statistical Yearbook

What we do & don’t do African Development Bank Group We do We don’t • Use data as it is published at national and international levels, with or without respect to international system of product classification • Calculation in terms of aggregation, derivation and generate some indicators as needed • Generate Export price indices for internal use • Collect specific data directlyfrom national sources for its publications • Compile data at national level • Estimate data gaps as a current practice. Specifically, AfDB doesn’t publish its estimates on data gaps. • Alter or change any data provided by country without country’s approval • Have final methodology to estimate data gaps (structure of data on previous year, mirror statistics, simple trends, etc.)

Challenges and expectations African Development Bank Group Internal needs Harmonize the methodologyin the area of data gap estimations with international and sub-regional partners Better presentation of Trade statistics for internal users Use of better data gaps estimates Provide a consistent knowledge base Capacity building Indentify the areas of capacity building at national level Generate statistical project to support trade statistics generation Help countries to better disseminate trade statistics
