Multiply Decimals L-2 6.NS.3
Remember… • Ignore the decimal points and multiply as usual... • Count how many total digits are on the right side of the decimal points in the factors you are multiplying... • Place the decimal point in your product (answer) so there are this many digits to the right.
Step 1: Multiply 1.2 x 5.3 --- you don’t need to line up the decimal or place values! • 1.2 • 5.3 • Reminder: We always multiply from right to left. 6 (3 x 2 = 6 ) We write down the unit, In this case 6, Under the 3
Step 2: Step 2: • 1.2 • 5.3 • We then multiply the 3 by the 1 3 6 (3 x 1 = 3) Write down the 3 next the 6
Step 3: 1 • Now we start multiplying with the 5 • 1.2 • 5.3 We multiply the 5 by the 2 Before we begin multiplying we must first place a 0 in the units column as the placeholder. 3 6 (5 x 2 = 10 ) 0 0 Again, we write down the unit and carry the tens
Step 4: 1 1.2 5.3 We multiply the 5 by the 1 3 6 6 0 0 (5 x 1 (+1) = 6 ) Again, we add the 1 carried earlier
Step 5: • 1.2 • 5.3 3 6 Now, we must add the numbers together 6 0 0 + 6 6 3
Step 6: • Finally, we need to add the decimal point to our answer. 1.2 5.3 6 3 6 For the correct decimal placement in your answer, you count how many digits are to the right of the decimal in the (factors) actual problem. 1 1 (1 + 1 = 2) There will be two digits after the decimal point in the answer. Start at the right of the answer and move left that many spaces. .
