  1. Transitions and Conjuntions Moving from one thought to another

  2. Move thoughts and ideas Transitions move action, ideas and time They are essential to the flow of the paper Without them, paper is choppy and disconnected

  3. Example Ann gathered her thoughts. Everything would get underway. She waited. She straightened her dress. This day was expected and planned. Ann was nervous and her hands shook. Time seemed to pass quickly and all eyes would be on her. The music started playing. She braced herself behind the scenes. It was time to take those first steps and meet up with her husband to be.

  4. Variety is the spice of life Use various transitions Insert them into different parts of your paper There is NO one right transition Avoid using “so” and “then” repeatedly. They are useful in moderate amounts

  5. Complete Example Ann gathered her thoughts. Everything would get underway shortly. While she waited, she straightened her dress. Even though this day was expected and planned for, Ann was nervous and her hands shook. Time seemed to pass quickly and all eyes would be on her eventually. The music started playing as she braced herself behind the scenes. It was time to take those first steps and finally meet up with her husband to be.

  6. Important What a difference! Makes the paragraph read much more smoothly than before. Experiment- try some different combinations!

  7. Questions What does it mean to be independent? If your independent, can you still sometimes rely on someone without getting really attached? So then what does it mean to be dependent? What happens when a dependent person does not have someone there to take ?

  8. Conjunction Junction…! Conjunctions are used to combine smaller phrases or clauses. Independent clauses can be their own sentence. Dependent clauses NEED to be with an independent clause. We use conjunctions to hook these items up!

  9. Independent clauses Terry graduated with honors. Kyle has to stay in school another year. Aliens abducted Diane. I went to the movies.

  10. Which conjunctions do I use? There are several types that can be used. ONLY CONJUNCTIVE ADVERBS REQUIRE A SEMICOLON (;) Refer to your sheet for a list of conjunctions The MOST common are the FANBOYS: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So These have a comma before they are used.

  11. Let’s Combine These! Notice the comma before ‘but’ and ‘so’! Terry graduated with honors. Kyle has to stay in school another year. Aliens abducted Diane. I went to the movies. Terry graduated with honors, but Kyle has to stay in school another year. Aliens abducted Diane, so I went to the movies.

  12. Dependent Clauses The conjunction is added to the beginning or middle of the clause: After I left school…. Whenever I listen to my IPod…. Even though I enjoy writing…. Notice that there is NO way these phrases can be on their own. They need something to complete them.

  13. Let’s complete them…. This phrase could stand alone if it needed to This phrase cannot stand alone. After I left school…. Whenever I listen to my IPod…. Even though I enjoy writing…. After I left school, I went to the mall. Whenever I listen to my IPod, I feel drowsy. Even though I enjoy writing,it can be extremely frustrating.

  14. Let’s take a look Ely decided to drive to Austin to see his favorite band. He didn’t want to go by himself. There were several friends that really wanted to go. The car was small and room was limited. He did not want to leave anyone behind. Ely decided to rent a large SUV and take everyone. Ely paid for the SUV with his own money. Everyone decided to pay for his ticket and hotel room.

  15. Much better! Ely decided to drive to Austin to see his favorite band, but he didn’t want to go by himself. There were several friends that really wanted to go;however, the car was small and room was limited. Because he did not want to leave anyone behind, Ely decided to rent a large SUV and take everyone. Ely paid for the SUV with his own money, so everyone decided to pay for his ticket and hotel room.
