  3. Major events of the time • North Carolina produces the Halifax resolves making it the first British colony to officially authorize its delegates to vote for independence • Richard henry lee of Virginia proposes a resolution calling for a declaration of independence • Virginia Declaration of rights by George Mason is adopted by the virgin convention of delegates • The Delaware general assembly votes to suspend government under the British crown

  4. Thomas’s point of view on major issues • Thomas Jefferson believed in the separation of church and state • He believed that the colonies had the right to the overthrow a tyrannical government

  5. Main points of the declaration of independence • Governments derive their authority from the consent of the people “Governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the constant governed “ • When government abuses its power, the people have the right to overthrow it “That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it.” • All men are created equally “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal”

  6. Fun facts • Thomas Jefferson was know as the Author of the declaration • There is something written on the back of the declaration, but it isn’t secret map code. There are just handwritten words saying “original declaration” • Once the declaration was written and signed, printer John Dunlap was asked to make 200 copies to be distributed throughout colonies • Today the Dunlap broadsides are extremely rare and valuable in 1989 someone discovered a previously unknown dun lap broadside it was sold for 8 million dollars • And of coarse the declaration of independence was signed on July 4, 1776
