  3. How Cost is Calculated • Experience Modifier Calculation • Experience modifier calculation • Expected losses, actual losses, class code rates and payroll amounts • Takes into consideration 3 years • FY ’08 (10/1/07) experience from fiscal years 2004, 2005, and 2006

Summary • EMS’ portion of workers’ compensation coverage is a major proportion of total cost • The experience modifier is driving cost of coverage throughout the District • If we had a modifier of .50 (like some agencies do in our area), we could save $164,048 which could be put into operations & salaries

Actions Taken • Injury/Accident analysis • Meet with employee, partner, and witnesses • Review injury/accident at monthly EMS supervisor meetings • Notify employee in writing of actions items • training needed, corrective action for not following policies, etc. • Update or clarify policies, procedures, or trainings, as needed • Monthly reports to PBM • Provide return-to-work opportunities • Make contact with injured employees weekly • Training & group discussions • New hire orientation and employee training • Explore outside training programs • EMS Supervisor training scheduled for 9/30-10/1 • Review equipment needs, current processes, policies, etc. • Aggressive recruitment • Corrective actions • Develop more comprehensive pre-employment screening • physical agility - future
