  3. OUR EDUCATIONAL APPROACH PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT recommendations

AN INTEGRATED UNIT FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE AN INTEGRATED UNIT FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE WHAT ‘n’ WHY: an integrated approach to teaching about sustainable living, in pursuit of a sustainable future. No overarching theme (e.g. water, waste, community). Instead, the overarching goal is to develop critical capacities and for students to be exposed to and arrive at “alternative ways” of doing things. INCLUDED: =Recommended questions (support critical engagement and appraisal – personal attitudes) =Stand-alone workshops – focus, race against clock, hurdle tasks, teacher chooses order =Continuity – blogging (teacher and students – authentic publishing of cognitive work) FOUR DETAILED PLANS 1 – Introduction to sustainability: Class Habits at Home 2 – Water Sustainability 3 – ‘Affluenza’ 4 – Clothes Swap

Blogging & The VELS At VELS 6, Blogging on Sustainability-related matters supports: Thinking Skills 6 - Reflection, evaluation and meta-cognition • At Level 6, when reviewing information and refining ideas and beliefs, students explain conscious changes that may occur in their own and others’ thinking and analyse alternative perspectives and perceptions. Thinking Skills 6- Communication 6 – Creativity • They apply selectively a range of creative thinking strategies to broaden their knowledge and engage with contentious, ambiguous, novel and complex ideas. Design, Creativity and Technology - Producing • They make products/systems that meet the quality, aesthetic, functionality and performance requirements outlined in the design brief. At VELS 6, when interacting with new, and sometimes challenging material... Communication 6 – Listening, viewing and responding • [Students] consider alternative views, recognise multiple possible interpretations and respond with insight. They use complex verbal and non-verbal cues, subject-specific language, and a wide range of communication forms. Students use pertinent questions to explore, clarify and elaborate complex meaning.
