  2. Operating a crane is no easy job, and it requires skills that have to be learned, perhaps at college or as an apprentice, together with plenty of practice. A crane has many different parts and functions, and it is essential to fully understand how they work and what to do under a variety of conditions. For instance, can you operate a crane in winds? Well, when they are up to 20 mph you can, but if they hit 40 mph then you need to stop everything immediately. Safety when operating a crane or hoist is paramount. An important part of a crane operating system is the pendant cable. This is used to supply signals in order to control the pendants which hang from overhead cranes and hoists, as well as some other sorts of handling equipment. The crane pendant can be operated by an operator working in the cab or by an individual actually on the ground controlling the movements by remote control, or perhaps a pendant cable that hangs down from the hoist and can be controlled by a push button system.

  3. Runway System Some cranes work on a runway system. For example, those that are used to lift cargo from ships that arrive at the dockyard will only require a limited amount of movement so can be mounted on rails. Again, these can be operated from the ground or the cab. If the ground, then the operator will walk along beside the rails to control the hoisting and lowering of items. Pendant cables have to be manufactured so that they can handle the continuous movement that occurs during operation. They need to be moisture resistant, since they can be out in all weathers, and also resistant to the heat which can occur on a hot summer day, as well as, conversely, cold temperatures which can occur in countries which have far more severe winters than the UK. In addition, they need to be resistant to chemicals with which they may come into contact. They also need to be very flexible and hard wearing, since they are in use all the time. Pendant cables can have several cores, depending upon requirements, and can often be obtained in small lengths as well as in rolls on drums, so that when replacement is needed, engineers can cut to whatever length they need.
