HOSPITAL DE SANT PAU and SANT PAU (XX° century) In 1997 theUNESCO Committee inscribed the Hospital de Sant Pau in Barcelona as masterpiece of the imaginative and exuberant Art Nouveau that flowered in early 20th century Barcelona. April 1900 - The jury announces the result of the competition called for the construction of the Hospital de Sant Pau. The one chosen was by Josep Domènech i Estepà but the tribunal of doctors unanimously rejected it on grounds of hospital hygiene. In order to ensure the hospital was built, help was sought from the Board of Management of the Hospital de la Santa Creu. An agreement was reached to draw up a joint plan for the Hospital de la Santa Creu and the Hospital de Sant Pau. The infirmaries and their general services were split into 48 large separate pavilions, joined together by underground galleries. The heating, water, gas and electricity services were installed in the open. Entrance door to the former Hospital de la Santa Creu 1401 - Construction begins on the Hospital de la Santa Creu, with Guillem Abiell as master builder. This was the only hospital in Barcelona for five centuries, until the early 20th century when it become insufficient for the city's rapidly growing population. THE NEW HOSPITAL SET ADJACENT THE MONUMENTAL HOSPITAL COMPLEX Il complesso ospedaliero esistente è recuperato nel nuovo progetto con la finalità di amplificare il concetto di ospedale al servizio della popolazione barcellonese, ospitando strutture didattiche, attività e servizi per la collettività. The new hospital houses 18 operating rooms, 560 beds, 60 ICU beds, 100 patients/days in day hospital.
