Your Handle How do you pick a name? • Is your real name available? • Do you have an online persona? • Get creative • No sexual innuendo • Avoid underscores • Avoid strings of numbers
Your Handle • Keep in mind, your Twitter username can affect search rankings • This is a good thing if you’re using Twitter properly and trying to build a personal brand
Your Profile • 160 characters: Use them wisely • Tell your story…quickly • Always include a link • Upload a profile picture • Upload a header picture • Name your city - not 512 or SMTX or ATX
Twitter Lingo • @ • Tweet • Mention • RT • MT • DM • Hashtag • Favorite • H/T
Best Practices • Find interesting people • Concentrate on listening first • Begin to interact • Slowly build your base of accounts following • Use the correct lingo • Use proper etiquette • Try the Goldilocks Principle when tweeting • Be polite and positive
1. Have a Quality Bio • Be honest • Be clever • Write in English, not text language • Include items that you’d like to talk with people about • Avoid a bunch of hashtags or symbols • Avoid terms like guru, ninja, experts, etc.
2. Use a Good Profile Picture • You look better than an egg (the Twitter default) • For most people, the egg profile picture is an instant red flag • Use a respectable pic • Remember your picture is small, so frame wisely
4. Be Mindful of Your Follower Ratio • Build your “following base” slowly • This ensures your ratio stays somewhat intact • If you’re following way more accounts than you have followers, it’s a red flag for spam
6. Tweet Respectfully • No one wants to follow someone who tweets too much • The Goldilocks Principle • This will be different for everyone
8. Tweet Yourself • People want to hear a genuine voice • People want to feel like they’re following someone who actually uses Twitter • Avoid linking accounts • Avoid Twitterfeeds
9. No Sales Pitches • If you work in sales, that’s fine • Don’t make it the sole source of content for your Twitter stream • No one wants to hear your sales pitch over and over and over…
10. No Auto-DMs • Smells like spam • A lot of the bigger accounts do this • It’s my #1 rule – If I get an auto-DM, I unfollow
