  1. Virtually kind Staying Positive in the Digital Age

  2. What is harassment? • Unwanted aggressive behavior that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. It includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, or excluding someone from a group on purpose.

  3. The Bystander Effect • This happens all the time in the real world • What do you think you would do? What did you actually do? • The bystander, who lets the incident happen, is just as dangerous as the aggressor

  4. The Bystander Effect • Bystander Effect: the more people there are, the less likely someone will take action • In social situations, you cannot expect that someone else will “take care of it” and shift responsibility • Scientifically proven • Kitty Genovese was murdered in New York and 38 people witnessed it, but no one called the police

  5. Who Are We?

  6. CR-16 • Compiled Report

  7. Telephone • What was the original message and the final message? What was different? • Rumors can be distorted easily • Spread quickly • Especially online, many people see a single post

  12. I’m honestly just trying to help you, but if you’re going to dress like that you might as well stop talking to me.

  13. It Is or It Isn’t? • How many of you see messages like these every day? • Will you think before you post next time? • Remember: if you’re unsure, don’t post it! Once it’s online, it can never truly be deleted.

  14. Resources • Sprigeo • Online green form • Make appointment with guidance counselor • www.cybertipline.com • www.hopeline.com

  15. Cross the Line • Everyone experiences bullying in some form • Nobody is ever alone • Were you surprised by the amount of people who crossed the line? • If we are surrounded by negativity, what can we do about it?

  16. Positivity Movement • What can you do to create your own “Positivity Movement”? • We feel that harassment will always exist, but you can do your share! • Like the Howard County Positivity Chain and add your own link of encouragement. • www.facebook.com/hocopositivitychain
