  2. Today We’ll Cover • Role of the school staff • Present security measures • The SRO • Action taken since Newtown • Community supported program

Current School Procedures • Fire Drill Monthly Report • Lockdown Drills, twice/year (Sept. & Feb.) • Lockdown Video annually • Must be documented for fire marshal • Know where your black box is located (2) • Map (fire drill map) • Evacuation Plan/Routes • Keys/Codes • Roster current student/staff

  4. School Staff Security Measures • While students are in class, lock the classroom doors. • Be aware, if you don’t recognize someone, report. • Lock exterior doors

  5. SRO • Currently have officers and support staff for 33 schools (MS/HS) • Visible • SRO trained for active shooter and all levels of intrusion. They attend training each summer. • Utilize them during staff development days or staff meeting to share their knowledge and discuss safety/security.

  7. Camera Grant • New cameras for Atkins, Southeast, North, Parkland • We could use the existing cameras to upfit: • 7 additional ES • 3 additional MS • Add additional cameras at 4 HS

  8. Cost to add Cameras • ES $10,500-$15,000 (Analog vs IP)

  9. Since the Newtown Shootings

  10. Law Enforcement Partners (ELE) • Elementary Schools- WSPD/KPD/FCSO are patrolling daily (to include nights & weekends). • WSPD Patrol Units will adopt a school. • WSPD/KPD/FCSO are performing security assessments at all elementary schools. (sro does this at MS/HS) • Superkids (10 officers)

  11. District Role • WSFCS/WSPD/FCSO/KPD • meet regularly. Above agencies have been provided site plans of our campuses. • Security assessments tie to our capital plan. • Actions of other LEA’s • Analyze • Procedures • Placement of SROs in ES • Card Access vs. Keys • Aiphone technology • Build vestibules at entrances (example)

What are other LEA’s considering? • Charlotte Meck- Aiphone at a single point of entry. security cameras in ES & MS card reader to allow access from mobile increase number of SROs ∙ Stokes- SRO in all schools remainder of this school year. ∙ DPI sent out a security survey recently ∙ News & Observer reported yesterday the legislature is likely to take on the issue of school safety

  13. Cost Analysis • Card Access $1.2M • Keys $25K • You have to collect if someone leaves or a lost key may cause the need to replace locks for entire campus. Ele. SROs $3.5M Vestibules$1.5M Aiphone * $120K * Recommendation to BOE

  14. Other Security Measures • D.O.G.S (Dads of Great Students) • Volunteers (Carver Alumni Association) • Our Parents and Students • Caring, Supportive Community that I hope can have dialogue vs. debate on this issue.

  15. It’s important to note there are no guarantees as we saw at Sandy Hook Ele. • We do need to be prepared by making security a priority, participate in the drills, and make yourself familiar with the emergency processes.
