  1. UNDERSTANDING THESIS STATEMENTS • The thesis statement is that sentence that contains the focus of your essay and tells your reader what the essay is going to be about. • The thesis statement is usually written as the last sentence of your introductory paragraph.

  2. An interesting metaphor… • Many writers think of a thesis statement as an umbrella. Everything that you carry along in your essay has to fit under this umbrella, and if you try to take on packages that don't fit, you will either have to get a bigger umbrella or something's going to get wet.

  3. Getting Started • A writer starts by discussing the BIG topic and narrows it to a more specific thesis statement about the big topic. • Subject: Rain forests • Topic: The importance of rain forests • Question: What is the importance of rain forests? • Thesis statement: Rain forests provide the human race with many resources. OR • Rain forests are complex living systems that contribute to the balance of life on this planet.

Writing Your Thesis Statement • Subject: Courage • Topic: (Person’s Name) - Jackie Robinson • Question: How is Jackie Robinson courageous? • Thesis Statement: • Whether protecting his family or protecting his team’s title, Jackie Robinson gave his all and showed many examples of true courage. • I watch this young, brave boy with Tourette’s syndrome and see how challenging it is for him, not knowing what the day will bring. • My grandmother had to show courage through sleepless nights, depressing days, and a face streamed with tears.
